Like every typical college student, we try to find a way to make some income to support our shopping or buying food everyday habits. Well look no farther, there are so many job opportunities on campus.
The Ernest R. Graham Center (GC) is a starting point, as it offers jobs in many parts of the school. You can get a job in the main office, event planning, the game room and even the art gallery.
Kelsey Mencia, who is Human Resources Generalist at the Biscayne Bay Campus, explains the many steps and benefits towards getting a job on campus.
“I would always tell students definitely networking. I think that networking can take you so far, of course, it is important the skills that they have. Like networking with your professors, they know connections inside and outside the University,” said Mencia.
She goes on to speak towards the different positions that can be held by students.
“So on campus we have student assistant positions, full time students, who has federal work studies. Temporary positions in any category or department that needs a temp, they can hire them as well,” said Mencia. “The student has the experience for a full position, they can also definitely work full time.”
Another present resource is the Career and Talent Development Department, where they can critique your resume, perform mock interviews with you and host career fairs on campus. Also you can go to Human Resources for campus employment; they offer a plethora of opportunities across campus.
“Where you can find a job would be online at careers.fiu.edu, they have all our openings on different campuses,” said Mencia.
Those many experiences that we get from campus jobs comes with some benefits.
“The benefits you know that your just a couple steps away from class and it makes it more convenient. You don’t have to worry about rushing because it’s all on campus and well as parking, you already paid for it,” said Mencia.
The process of starting to work can depend solely on the position that you were hired for. Some position can require background check that can take a week longer.
While other positions don’t need a background check and you can start work within two weeks.
There are many ways to secure a job on campus by networking and putting yourself out there. Even using the resources to work on your resume and interview skills will help boost your resume.
“I’ve seen with students that worked so well, that hiring departments would tell them, “Hi, how about you apply to this position, we know how you work. We would like to see you in our pool to possibly interview you,” said Mencia.
