Dueling Column: SCOTUS decision is a victorious win for freedom of speech

Ashley Verdugo/Staff Writer

Free speech has won again. The Supreme Court recently stated that California cannot force religiously-oriented crisis pregnancy centers to give women information contrary to their services.

In the majority opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, “Governments must not be allowed to force persons to express a message contrary to their deepest convictions. Freedom of speech secures freedom of thought and belief. This law imperils those liberties.”

The whole point of crisis pregnancy centers is to show women the alternatives she has to getting an abortion. Forcing the centers to tell women that abortion is an option is contrary to their beliefs and therefore, an oxymoron.

No matter how “compelling” the government thinks speech is, it cannot force it on anyone. The law is also logically flawed.

Rather than find other ways to provide women with the option of abortions, the California legislature decided that it’s the job of crisis pregnancy centers to do soas if Planned Parenthood wasn’t already getting enough business.

But California thought it’d be best to go after religiously-oriented pregnancy centers. This is yet another example of how the Left isn’t after equality and tolerance. The Left doesn’t respect your opinion or beliefs.

This law was trying to make void the other options women had to abortions. It was also seeking to silence the pro-life movement slowly.

The majority of the pro-life movement is religious and deeply held. Plain and simple, I believe abortion is murder.

Women going to crisis pregnancy centers are seeking a different alternative to ending a life. They want real options and help. Women want to know that they can raise a child, that they will be helped, that they’re not alone and most importantly, that the life in their womb is not a mistake.

Abortion clinics aren’t in the business of empowering single mothers and providing them with the best options. Instead they want to cover every single true option a woman has. Their solution is to murder the life inside the womb and not tell women about the consequences of an abortion.

Say what you will about this ruling, but one thing is certain: the First Amendment isn’t only applied to speech you agree with. The First Amendment is for all, not just the Left.
