EDITOR’S NOTE: Football season is here…so, the madness begins

Football season is here and with it comes along new tailgating rules, new spirit and a new quarterback.

This is the second year that the University’s football team will be led by head coach Butch Davis and with the University gearing up to energize our Panthers community to head out to the stands, throw on some #FIURep gear and cheer for our team, we’ve decided to dedicate this week’s magazine to all things football.

Featured on our cover are Christian Alexander and James Morgan, the two leading candidates for the Panthers quarterback position during training camp. Alexander was the Panthers starting quarterback during the spring and Morgan is a new grad-transfer from Bowling Green. Visit page 7 if you’re interested in learning more about them and the ongoing quarterback competition.

Page 7 and 8 is also where you’ll find this year’s outlook on the Panthers and the five players are Sports Director Brett Shweky think will make an impact in this year’s season.

Two of our columnists also duel it out this week on whether athletes should use their platform to promote their social and political beliefs. You can read their arguments on page 9 and let us know what you think by voting in our Twitter poll. Just search us up @_PantherNOW.

Football games also mean tailgating but if you’re planning on partying it up right before the game, you better visit page 2 to read about the new tailgating rules the University is implementing this year, along with a new “alcohol free zone” section of the tailgate for students who want to party without the liquor.

Before I end my Editor’s Note, I also want to say goodbye to Harold Lopez, The Roar’s General Manager, who will be leaving us to begin an internship with “Good Morning America” in New York City. Good luck, Harold, I’ll miss you and all the “ArtPopness” you brought Student Media.
