It’s time for the Biscayne Bay campus to expand

Rina Factor/ Contributing Writer

FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus is where I started out my freshman year. The next semester I had all my classes on the Modesto Maidique campus which gave me insight into how BBC lacks certain resources that MMC has due to its smaller student body.

While much smaller than MMC, it still has quite a few places to eat including a fair amount of variation; with Starbucks and a mini market.

Its resources include the extensive library, computer lab, and resources for students looking to get involved in school. However, there are still certain measures that could expand BBC’s campus offerings.

A personal anecdote to illustrate this point. While BBC has a computer lab in the Wolfe University Center as well as in the library, their computers do not have netbeans software downloaded.

My freshman year I took Programming I and my computer crashed. I had to come to MMC to complete my assignment and stayed until 10 p.m.

Netbeans is a software that is used to program. It would have been more convenient to stay late at the BBC campus. Since many students commute between schools it could prove beneficial to survey how many students at the BBC would like netbeans installed on the computers as well as other software programs.

Student involvement is a great way for students to enhance their college experience and develop their talents. While FIU has a drama department, there are no comedy troupes, stand up, or improv groups. It would be a great way to utilize BBC to further develop FIU’s theatre program.

BBC also has many clubs for those passionate about  sports including triathalon training, running, swimming, and yoga.

However, there are no martial arts classes offered at the BBC campus. One possible way to see what types of resources would be beneficial to a large enough population to warrant its value would be sending out an email surveying students who frequent BBC to offer their input on what resources would best serve the BBC students population.
