Florida’s Republican candidate for Governor in the upcoming 2018 midterm elections, Ron DeSantis, visited the University to deliver a speech on his platform.

On Thursday, Sept. 20, DeSantis came to the Student Government Senate chambers in GC 150 on the Modesto Maidique Campus. DeSantis was introduced by FIU’s College Republicans, who organized the event.

During his short speech, DeSantis touched on elements of his platform including a focus on education, particularly in technical and trade skills rather than solely on higher education.

After his speech, DeSantis shook hands with student Republicans in attendance as well as members of the Student Government Council at MMC, and was briefly interviewed by several news outlets in attendance.
