We’re lucky to live in a free, democratic society, but, we have to take care of it.
That’s why it’s so important to vote every election, including midterms. Voting is a constitutional right that is sometimes taken for granted, but it’s the most powerful tool we have as American citizens.
And this year, you don’t have to go very far to make your voice heard.
Like it says on page 4, our University has been selected as an early voting site, making it easier than ever for our community to go out to the polls. That is, if you take advantage of it.
Our University isn’t the only place you can vote though. Our cover lists all of the voting locations in both Miami-Dade and Broward County and if you need an interactive map to see which location is closer to you, then click here.
And this midterm election isn’t like the others. Florida Governor Rick Scott has reached his term limit and Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum are vying for the seat. DeSantis has been endorsed by President Donald Trump and Gillum has been endorsed by former President Barack Obama, throwing Florida’s governor race into the national spotlight and making it one of the most hotly contested races to watch.
And our columnists are battling it out on pages 6 and 7 to determine who’s right for the job.
Controversy is also surrounding this year’s bundled amendments. The amendments in question are requiring voters to vote yes or no to more than one proposal at a time and the issue has reached the Florida Supreme Court. One of the amendments could also affect the fees students pay at our university. Visit pages 2 and 3 to learn more.
