For the first time, student veterans can now enjoy a military discount throughout Veterans Appreciation Week at FIU.

Starting Nov. 2nd and running until Nov. 13th, a 10 percent discount for regular priced clothing will be given at the University’s bookstore for veterans who qualify for it.

In order to qualify for the veterans discount, one must present a military ID, state driver’s license with veteran designated, Department of Veteran Affairs ID, DD-214 Form 4 or active duty orders according to Barnes and Noble bookstore General Manager, Mike Comiskey.

“We are excited to launch this promotion in November and expect to run it again in the future,” said Comiskey in an email to Student Media.

Matthew DeBord, treasurer of the Student Veterans of America at FIU approached Comiskey with the idea for the discount, and the two decided on a promotion that falls on Veteran’s Day and the FIU football game at home against FAU where the veterans and active-duty personnel will be honored for their service.

“FIU is definitely becoming more veteran-friendly,” said DeBord to Student Media. “It’s just a matter of getting other pieces of the University to seek out veterans for any events that are geared towards [them] and give them our input for anything that’s going on.”

Although the veterans discount will only be around for the beginning of November, DeBord is still advocating for military style gear to be discounted at 10 percent year-round, though there haven’t been any final decisions.

“For a veteran that’s starting here at FIU it makes the campus seem more willing to appreciate all of our sacrifice and duty that we’ve done,” said DeBord.
