The Student Government Council at the Biscayne Bay campus is hosting a showcase style outdoor event on the Bay called Artsy on Nov. 13 at 5:30-9:00 p.m.
The purpose of Artsy is “to allow talented FIU students to showcase their work, whether they’re poets, artists, singers, photographers and more,” according to Karla Hernandez, the marketing coordinator of SGC-BBC.
She came up with this idea after an encounter she had during her first semester at FIU. Hernandez said she met a friend who had aspirations of becoming a singer and college was not her first option.
“That really had me thinking about all the other students that thought the same or were bound to giving up on their talents and dreams because college was getting in the way of that,” said Hernandez.
This event isn’t a competition by any means. For her, it is for students to have an outlet to express their talents.
“They shouldn’t give up on their dream which they’re passionate about because they’re scared of failure,” said Hernandez. “No one really knows if they’ll succeed unless they try.”
This is more of a showcase or gallery, instead of a competition for a prize or money. The “prize” for this event is exposure, having people recognize how special the students’ talents are, and maybe even inspire them to pursue that initial dream, said Hernandez.
The event is free and open to the public.
