EDITOR’S NOTE: If you need to break the ice, just use food

It’s amazing how food can help grow relationships, whether it’s to start conversation at a party or to give you time to learn something new about someone.

It’s amazing how food can help grow relationships, whether it’s to start conversation at a party or to give you time to learn something new about someone.

And here at the University, it’s especially important to college students, which is why this week’s theme pages will center on food.

At Student Media, for example, one of our new unofficial traditions this semester is to order takeout and have a “family dinner” on Friday night’s while we’re busy creating the upcoming week’s magazine. This gives our eboard the opportunity to slow down, sit down and talk.

We also try to do “family lunches” whenever we can at our Biscayne Bay office.

But, we’re not the only ones that notice how food can act as a connector. One of our columnists has Cuban and Lebanese roots and describes on page 9 how his family’s merge of cultural flavors has changed his cultural and dietary appreciation.

Our University is also home to a Chopped Teen Tournament Grand Champion who discovered her love for cooking at 4 years old. You can learn more about her on page 6.

You’ll also want to visit page 6 to learn about the University’s food pantry, which provides free food to students in need.

But, of course, we can’t talk food without talking conversation.

If you need something to talk about with your friends, let me recommend visiting pages 2 and 3 to learn the latest news regarding the Student Government Councils at the Modesto Maidique and BBC campuses.

And for our sport fans, definitely check out page 12 for our Sports Director’s recap of how the Panthers men’s basketball team won their first game of the 2018-2019 season against Webber International Warriors.

For our social media followers, make sure you visit our Twitter @_PantherNOW to take part in our Thanksgiving poll: “What do you eat on Thanksgiving?” because we want to know if you do turkey, pork or something else.

And keep an eye out on our Youtube page for a foody-type video ;)
