When personal trainer Daniella Alzamora lived in Peru, her private school would take her every month to donate toys and spend time with children in need. When she came to the States and now to FIU, she brought that spirit of giving with her.

Alzamora, along with the Wellness and Recreation Center on the Modesto Maidique Campus is hosting a Christmas drive to collect toys for children at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in West Miami.

In return for donating new toys at the north entrance of the WRC, participants enter their names into a raffle for two free sessions of personal training with Alzamora.

“I’m not getting paid for this. I’m giving my time for free so people have an incentive to give,” said Alzamora.

Winners will get a personal training assessment where Alzamora can determine what kind of exercise they need, and will then get two sessions with her on her own time.

Leoncio Alvarez, assistant director for marketing and membership for the WRC, said that … approached his office with the idea, and they were happy to start the initiative.

“We would like to start reaching out more into the community, and this is one way of doing that. One of my goals for 2019 is to do more outreach,” Alvarez.

So far the drive has collected a few toys, but their goal is to at least receive 50 donations by the cutoff date of Saturday Dec. 22 to take to the hospital on Sunday, Dec. 23.

“It may be selfish, but helping people makes me feel good. When my family travels back to Peru, we always bring gifts to give out to people we see in need. I want other people to feel that goodness,” said Alzamora.
