Coursicle app keeps track of open classes before add/drop

Students at the university can now track when a course is available while registering, thanks to Coursicle: an app developed by a student for students.

Joe Puccio, co-founder of Coursicle spoke to Student Media via email about his app, which is available for FIU students on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store.

“So far over 700 FIU students are using the Coursicle app to track Spring 2019 classes,” said Puccio. “Last semester, the number of FIU students using the Coursicle app shot up 10 times from 50 to over 500 student users.”

Puccio said that the idea for the app while he was registering for classes when he attended University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill as a math and computer science major.

“I spent several hours trying to plan out my class schedule, and then when I finally went to register for my classes I got into only one of the five I needed to take,” said Joe  “I started working on a program that would text me when a class I wanted had an available seat.”

Although he planned on just using it himself, eventually the idea broadened to include other users.

“One of my friends suggested opening it up to other students, and at the end of the registration period, about 900 students had signed up,” said Puccio. “The next semester, 1800 students had signed up, and it just kept growing by word of mouth.”

Coursicle in its current state is designed for students to notify them when a class opens for a semester. This is a feature that FIU’s own course registration system does not have.

“Coursicle removes a lot of the tedium from schedule planning,” said Puccio. “The software the university provides to search for classes is usually very outdated and tedious to use. So, Coursicle really came out of a pain that we as well as our friends were experiencing while we were students.”

My.FIU.edu offers features such as display options to view registered courses in a weekly or list view, but it doesn’t notify one when a course is available.

Coursicle helps students plan out their schedule with a feature that allows the student to search a course and drag to a planner, helping visualize a semester’s agenda.

The app also processes a request when selecting the course. Once it’s been processed, the application advises if the selected course is ‘Open’ to ‘Closed’ to ‘Waitlist’, specifying their availabilities.

This process helps students eventually narrow down what their courses for the semester will look like to avoid an overlapped schedule, or even finally register to a class that is needed to graduate.

Supporting over 830 universities, Coursicle tracks different courses offered at the selected university for any major.

The program offers students two ways of using it. Students can track one course on the application for free, or $4.99 to track unlimited courses for one semester.

Coursicle recently just launched a feature that allows students to track unlimited classes for free when referring to three friends, Puccio told FIU Student Media.

Coursicle is compatible with iOS and Android phones and is now available to track Spring 2019 classes.
