The FIU men’s basketball team beat Louisiana Tech University (75-69) on Panther territory on Saturday, Feb. 2. After eleven lead changes and the game being tied six times, the Panthers came up with the win with huge defensive stops that led to offensive points.
Guard Brian Beard Jr. was the second highest scorer for the Panthers with 16 points contributing some major baskets and steals down the stretch of this game.
But, during the second half, the Bulldogs made a comeback with offensive rebounds. LA Tech Anthony Duruji gave his team a boost with 14 rebounds. FIU guard Trejon Jacob returned the offensive plays with 24 points and one steal.
In the press meeting after the game, Beard. talked about the plays that were used to help get a win for the Panthers.
“I love making plays that puts my teammates in the position to make shots in which we all love doing,” said Beard.
FIU head coach Jeremy Ballard loved how his team passed the ball tonight and locked down defensively towards the end of the game. Ballard has confidence in his players for the upcoming Conference USA championships in March.
“There are many things we need to continue to work on before March, but if we can capitalize on it, I think we can make a run at this thing, “said Ballard
Beard also believes that the Panthers will be able to take charge of the conference.
“We check the conference standing every day and right now we’re just two games out of 1st place and don’t see any reason why we can’t make a run at this thing,” said Beard
The Panthers will go on a road trip before returning home Thursday, Feb. 14, to face Rice University and Saturday, Feb. 16, to close out the season against North Texas University.
