The FIU softball team won their first softball game of the season at home against the University of Memphis on Friday, Feb. 8.

The game started off great for the Panthers as in the first inning starting pitcher Megan Kugelmann was not letting the Tigers hit anything.

On the other side, the first batter of the Panthers season, first team All-Conference outfielder Jackie Schoff hit a single and then immediately stole second base to put herself into scoring position.

Outfielder Alexis Johns hit a sacrifice grounder to advance Schoff and just like that FIU saw themselves with a 1-0 lead by the end of the first inning.

At the start of the second inning and Kugelmann is still going strong on the mound and with a little help from the second baseman Brittany Phillips and third baseman Tori Jones. Both securing spectacular catches to end the inning and keep Kugelmann’s perfect game alive.

In the top of the third inning is where the game switches momentum and Memphis comes out swinging, they ended up tying the game at 1-1.
With the start of the lineup coming up FIU hoped to light a spark and take control back of this game.

That is exactly what happened as Schoff hit a booming ball down centerfield getting her a triple for the day and immediately putting her into scoring position with zero outs on the board. She would later score in the inning put the FIU panther back in the lead 2-1.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth innings were quite uneventful as both defenses were playing amazing and neither team were able to get any points on the board.

The top of the seventh inning was very entertaining as closer Allison Muraskin was put in the game to “close it out.”

With one out and runners on first and second, the Memphis batter hit the a line drive into center field.

Schoff made a clean diving catch to get the out leading to a final strike out for Muraskin to give the FIU Panthers the win on their first game of the season.
