Baseball team takes to the diamond for practice

Written by Daniel Torres/Staff Writer

The Florida International University baseball team hosted its annual Pantherfest for fans to watch a scrimmage and get familiar with the new team on Friday, Feb. 8. Although, there was supposed to be a meet and greet with the team, unfortunately that did not happen.

On the bright side, fans witnessed a great scrimmage with promising insight for this upcoming season. The scrimmage consisted of Team Gray vs Team Pinstripes, these names were according to the uniform each team was wearing.

The evening commenced with batting practice and fielding drills with a couple of minor fielding errors, the Panthers looked sharp on the offensive side. Batting practice lasted around thirty minutes followed by the teams taking the field for the scrimmage.

The Pinstripes opened up with a solo home run on their first at bat. The Gray Team really struggled with their pitching throughout the night as the Pinstripes had hot bats.

Infielder John Rodriguez was on fire for the Pinstripes as he put the ball into play almost at every at bat.

Outfielder Lorenzo Hampton Jr. is another prospect to watch this season as he put the ball into play many times as well for the Pinstripes. Although Team Gray did make a comeback and tied the game, it was too much to handle as the Pinstripes returned to pile on the runs. Coach Melendez called the scrimmage at the seventh inning to give the Pinstripes the win.

After the scrimmage, Coach Melendez gave his team feedback which followed by the team thanking all the fans who came out to support. This event had a good fan turn out as many enjoyed the great music and a fun scrimmage. The Panthers open the season Friday, Feb. 15, against Stony Brook University on Panther territory at the FIU baseball stadium at 7 p.m.
