In a grueling 71-57 defeat, the Mean Green ending the Panthers’ winning streak against them. The FIU (19-13) men’s basketball team was defeated by North Texas University (21-11) in their Championship USA tournament match on Wednesday, March 13.
The two universities met for the third time this season and despite having won against North Texas twice before, the Mean Green made a comeback against the Panthers to take the win.
North Texas Umoja Gibson lead the Mean Green brigade with 21 points. Followed by North Texas Zachary Simmons with 19 points, 16 rebounds, and one assist and Michael Miller with eight points, ten rebounds, and three assists.
In the first half, the Mean Green took an immediate lead with 39 points against the Panthers’ 22 points.
A layup was made by North Texas forward Zachary Simmons to start off the Mean Green lead 2-0. The Panthers returned with a layup of their own by forward Osasumwen Osaghae. Despite keeping pace with North Texas at the beginning of the game, the Mean Green took the lead with the Panthers unable to pick up the pace.
North Texas extended their lead in the second half with FIU struggling to catch up. The game ended with a 14-point difference between the final scores.
The Panthers guard Brian Beard Jr. totaled 13 points, one rebound, and five assists for the team. Along with Osaghae with ten points, 12 rebounds, and one assist and forward Devon Andrews who scored ten points, four rebounds, and one assist.
