The Student Government Council at the Biscayne Bay Campus will be hosting a lecture with Grammy award-winning artist Clifford “T.I.” Harris on Thursday, March 28.

The lecture is part of SGC-BBC’s ongoing lecture series, where celebrities and public figures are invited to the University to speak to students and answer their questions.

Aaliyah Gordon, director of events for SGC-BBC, said reaching out to students in the various colleges at FIU, especially at BBC, is key to the lecture series.

“It’s good to appeal to the colleges that we have here and bring resources out to help the students,” said Gordon. “Even if it’s just advice or something, it’s best to appeal to what’s on our campus as well.”

Normally, SGC-BBC hosts three lectures as part of their Spring series. However, the council was only able to host one lecture this semester, according to SGA Advisor and Assistant Director Larissa Adames.

“We’re only having one, and that’s because of budgets,” said Adames. “Next year, we’ll probably just have one or two smaller speakers, depending on how next year’s council wants to do it.”

SGC-BBC also does not have a director of lectures for the 2018-2019 school year. SGC-BBC President Jefferson Noel organized this semester’s lecture with assistance from Adames.

“T.I. was one of those people that fit the categories in what we were looking for, and we got a great response from the students, so our goal now is just to just ramp up our marketing to bring in as many students as possible from all the campuses at FIU,” said Noel.

The lecture will consist of a moderated conversation between Noel and the guest. The last 20 minutes of the presentation are a question and answer session with the audience. Questions that will be asked during the lecture will tackle popular national topics, according to Noel.

“I would ask students to be ready for a real, authentic conversation,” said Noel. “We’re interested in having a meaningful dialogue and a conversation that’s pertinent to society and to how we operate.”

The lecture is free to all students and will take place on Thursday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Wolfe University Center Ballrooms. To register or for more information, visit eventbrite.com/e/sga-bbc-lecture-series-presents-ti-tickets-57739512436.
