After the recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, members of the FIU community came together yesterday afternoon for a memorial and panel discussion about gun violence.

An overflowing room of students, faculty, and government officials sat in on an informative teach-in on How to Understand and Deal with Gun Violence, hosted by the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs.

Audience members observed the memorial with tears in their eyes.

A team of panelists ranging from judges, police officers, psychologists, and professors elaborated on their perspectives of gun violence while informing the audience on what they can do in an effort to prevent and handle gun violence.

In a speech, President Mark B. Rosenberg emphasized that no matter your relation to these events, we are all individually affected in some way.

Panelist and Psychologist from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Christine Sainvil, listed important ways to deal with the effects of gun violence.

“Limit what we ingest, surround ourselves with our community, and feel free to make use of resources on campus such as CAPS,” she said.
