Senator Rick Scott Urges Floridians to Prepare, Evacuate if Ordered

Senator Rick Scott urged Floridians to prepare for Hurricane Dorian, Monday, Sept. 2, at the National Hurricane Center on the Modesto Maidique Campus.

He also stressed the need to evacuate if ordered.

“Why take a chance…go someplace where you’re going to be safer,” he said.

Water, not wind, is the leading cause of deaths during hurricanes. Hurricane Dorian is expected to drop 2 to 4 inches of rain in most areas of Florida, with coastal regions seeing 4 to 6 inches. Isolated areas could see 6 to 10 inches.

Miami-Dade and Broward county are expected to get at least a foot of storm surge and localized flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

The slow moving hurricane devastated parts of the Bahamas Sunday night and Monday morning. #FIUStrong, the University’s interdepartmental aid program is already working on ways to help those affected.

Dorian is a Category 4 beast inching closer to Florida’s east coast, and while FIU is out of the projected cone, classes are cancelled on Tuesday.

Governor Ron DeSantis also visited he Center in preparation Dorian and urged residents to prepare.
