Fashion is everywhere. It’s walking down the halls of FIU, waiting in line at Cafe Bustelo and sitting in the Steven and Dorothea Green Library to study for a midterm.

So what is the general style at FIU? Is it the same as other American colleges? What do students have to say about their own style?

Some students say the general clothing trends at FIU are a mix of sporty and casual.

“A lot of people wear sporty clothes around FIU… many times with chanclas,” said chemistry student Vayami Mas. “I think they dress sporty because there is a lot of walking around FIU, and sporty clothes are more comfortable for all that walking.”

Samantha Graison, a high school student at Ferguson who is dual-enrolled at FIU, agrees.

“I’ve noticed that fashion at FIU is very sporty. It’s what I expected college style to be like because athletic wear gives you the freedom to be comfortable, as opposed to high school where maybe you were used to wearing uniforms,” Graison said.

Like Graison, biology major Marvella Lopez agrees.

“FIU students dress pretty casual,” said Lopez. “There seems to be an even balance between sporty and casual outfits. I think the climate has a lot to do with the style at school since athletic and casual clothes are the easiest thing to wear in Miami with the heat.”

Other students say that the style at FIU doesn’t fall under a certain category.

“I have seen a lot of ripped jeans and athletic clothes like Adidas around FIU,” said biology student Fabio Fundora. “But at the same time, lots of students dress up and wear some really nice outfits. I just think students here dress very distinctly.”

Fundora isn’t the only one that thinks students dress up.

“Most students here dress nice, usually in jeans and a clean shirt. Some even wear suits depending on where they are at in their academic career,” said Nich Marmol, an FIU business student. “I think the reason that people dress nice at FIU is because when they see others around them dressing well, people adapt to their style.”

Yasmine Washington, a biology student at FIU, has a different perspective.

“The general trend varies. You can see some really high fashion stuff, and then you see some people that don’t care about what they wear,” said Washington.

According to Maria Pablo, an engineering major, FIU’s overall style is laid-back compared to other universities.

“It’s very easy and very Miami: sandals, shorts, etc.,” she said. “People dress comfortably because it is more convenient when commuting, especially since FIU is a commuter school.”

Weather is another influencing factor when it comes to style, according to Fundora.

“I’d say people generally dress less lazy at FIU than at other universities,” said Fundora. “There aren’t as many hoodies and jackets as there would be up north because of the difference in weather.”

Marmol thinks the athletic trend is universal.

“The style at FIU is similar to other colleges because I think all college students like to be comfortable, and the sporty trend is popular everywhere,” said Marmol.

Some students explained what their personal style is and why.

“My go-to is sporty because it is very comfortable and cute,” said Washington.

Similar to Washington, Fundora prefers to dress comfortably.

“I’d say my personal style is normally just a t-shirt and jeans because it is comfortable and easy,” she said.

Marmol agrees.

“Normally, I dress casual or sporty because I like to be comfortable. I wear blue jeans, something short and sandals,” he said. “I don’t come dressed to impress. I just come to get my stuff done and whenever I am free to go home, I go home.”

Next time you’re grabbing a colada or walking around ducks to get to class, take a look around and see what you notice about FIU fashion trends.
