Update 10/22/19:

Miami Dade Police confirmed the identity of the dead student as 19-year-old Joshua Richardson. They did not release a cause of death.

Original Story:

FIU Police found a student dead inside his dorm on the Modesto Maidique Campus late Thursday night. He was likely dead for several days before being found.

The police department received a call from the student’s family around 10 p.m. on Oct. 17 because the family hadn’t heard from him in some time and wanted to check on him, according to FIUPD Public Information Officer Delrish Moss.

FIUPD responded to the call by visiting the student’s room in Lakeview Hall North, and when they entered his room they found him there unresponsive.

“When we found him it looked like he had been there dead for a couple of days,” said Moss.

Around 2 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 external relations sent a university-wide email about the death of the student in the Lakeview North dorm building.

The student’s name and the cause of death are still unknown but police don’t suspect “foul play.”

His family was notified, according to Moss, and Miami-Dade Police are leading the investigation into the death.

University Housing staff declined to comment to PantherNOW, deferring instead to External Relations.
