Hailed as one of the most advanced Cuban pianists by Cuban piano legend Chucho Valdés, Cuban and New York-based pianist David Virelles will be performing at FIU.
Virelles will be performing danzones, or music from Cuba’s official medical genre and dance, by legendary composers from 19th-century Cuba.
“He has a jazzier toner rather than traditional,” said Jorge Duany, the Director of the Cuban Research Institute.
The concert is part of the 15th installment of the Cuban Research Institute’s annual Classically Cuban Concert, titled “Lineage with David Virelles featuring Hilario Bell and José Armando Gola.”
Bell will be playing the timbal- a percussion instrument- and Gola will be on the acoustic bass.
The Cuban Research Institute invites different artists every year to give their take of Cuban heritage.
This year, the concert will focus on the evolution of Cuban music by giving a modern take on the 19th century Cuban genre.
The annual concerts serve as a reminder for those looking to reconnect with their Cuban roots.
“The purpose of these annual concerts is to preserve the heritage of Cuba,” said Duany.
The concert will be taking place in at the Modesto A Maidique Campus’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center this Sunday from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
Tickets for current FIU students are $10, $20 for FIU alumni, faculty and staff, and $25 for general admission.
Seats are available on a first-come first-serve basis.
