Bridge collapse victims expecting a share of $103 million

By: Jose Ribalta/Staff Writer

Nearly two years after FIU’s bridge collapsed, A. Jay Cristol, senior bankruptcy judge, confirms that families of the six killed and 10 injured will soon receive compensation.

The Munilla Construction Management Company is dividing almost $103 million among the sixteen families. MCM was the contractor employed by FIU to manage the bridge that collapsed during March of 2018.

The money will be distributed mid-January of 2020 and will serve as a means to relieve the families’ grief.

Twenty defendants have been sued for their involvement in the bridge’s collapse. Among these is the FIGG Engineering Group, a Tallahassee based organization that was responsible for constructing the 950-ton bridge.

However, not every defendant has joined in MCM’s settlement with the victim’s families.

Louis Berger, an engineering consulting firm hired to double-check FIGG’s design and calculations, has not joined in MCM’s settlement and has not expressed intention of settling.

Despite this, Judge Cristol says he’ll do his best to expedite the settlement process; especially after the National Transportation Board has pinpointed oversights and negligence as the cause behind the bridge collapse.
