In probably the most shocking move of the FIU football offseason, kicker Jose Borregales will be a Hurricane after entering the transfer portal in late December.
The last time we saw Borregales was in the Camellia bowl against Arkansas State where he hit 4 field goals including a 52-yarder. However, he missed a potential go-ahead field goal from 29-yards out in the fourth quarter.
After the Panthers shocked the Hurricanes back in November, where Borregales was a key contributor, that he would be leaving for the Panthers’ dubbed “University of Coral Gables”.
For Borregales, this decision was simply business. After an uproar of disavowment for Borregales by FIU fans on Twitter, Borregales wants fans to know it’s nothing against FIU.
“I want fans to know that this decision was not intended to hurt anyone’s feelings. I never meant to disrespect anyone in any way, I was simply following my dreams as an athlete to play at the biggest stage possible.” said Borregales
Borregales will undoubtedly gain more exposure at UM as he heads into his final year of eligibility. His younger brother, Andres Borregales, has already committed to the Hurricanes after he graduates in 2021.
Borregales will go down as the best kicker in FIU history. He left his mark at FIU and hopes fans won’t forget his time with the Panthers.
“I have nothing but love for FIU and i can’t thank them enough for the opportunity they gave me. No matter what, i am an FIU alum and FIU will always follow me wherever i go.” said Borregales.
There is no bad blood between Borregales and his former teammates. Many players have wished him the best and told him to “ball out” according to Borregales.
There is going to be a lot of pressure on Borregales as he enters his last year of eligibility. He has shown consistent ability to nail the deep kicks but has lacked that same consistency from mid-range.
On top of missing a few key kicks for the Panthers in 2019, Borregales will come into Coral Gables with a lot to prove in 2020.
