PDA Is Cancelled This Valentine’s Day

Guido Gonzalez/PantherNOW

There are 365 days a year you can publicly display affection towards your significant other, but there is no reason to go all out on Valentine’s Day.

Whether it’s making contact with the couples making-out around campus or the couples who hold hands and whisper sweet nothings to each other during lectures, there is an overabundance of canoodling on every campus at FIU.

It’s even weirder at BBC, where high schoolers congregate in the game room in the Wolfe University Center like it’s a Disney channel movie.

As much as this editorial would lead you to believe, nobody on our staff is bitter and not all of us are single. But even those planning on traditional dinner and drinks with their loved ones agree that enough is enough.

There are plenty of reasons why most passersby will find your nuzzling uncomfortable. Sometimes it even represents a double-standard to queer people who get the side eye for doing as much as holding hands in public, as one of our columnists mentioned. It’s also just weird for anybody to make accidental eye contact with someone sucking on another person’s face. We hope you understand.

So for those of you whose moms don’t allow SO’s in the house, get a room—please. We get you don’t have a dorm or apartment to go back to, but FIU is a big school and we’re pretty sure you can find other places to do your business in, such as:

  • Deuxième Maison. That place is like a maze.
  • The top of the astronomy building. Make out under the stars!
  • Panther Parking Garage. I mean, if you haven’t discovered that one yet…
  • Any empty classroom that’s not in the Graham Center. Emphasis on “not in the Graham Center.”
  • Or just find a partner who lives on campus. Nearly 54,000 students attend FIU; we’re sure you’ll find someone who resides in University Apartments or within walking distance of either campus.

To the couples constantly making out next to our office, we hope we’ve provided some helpful tips, and salute you for immortalizing your love in print.
