With Coronavirus spreading, delicate and serious precautions are taken as FIU students head out for spring break.
Earlier on Friday, FIU External Relations sent out an email informing students to stay alert and avoid spreading disease. The university is monitoring the outbreak of the disease as the numbers continue to rise with 77,000 confirmed cases and more than 2,000 deaths according to the CDC.
Declared as a “public health emergency” by the World Health Organization, students are asked to be extra careful when they’re on spring break.
For example, maintaining a distance of at least three feet from anyone with respiratory problems, refrain from touching mouth and nose and washing your hands frequently or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
A list on PantherNow has ways to prevent the virus from spreading.
A majority of these cases are at the heart of the Wuhan, Hubei province in Central China but other cases have been reported in neighboring countries such as Singapore, Japan, and the U.S.
As previously announced in their previous email, FIU has suspended all university-affiliated travel to China until further notice. The State Department has also issued a “Do Not Travel Advisory for China.”
Students who have been in contact with anyone who has traveled to these countries mentioned should avoid contact for a period of 14 days. If students begin to show signs of symptoms according to the CDC website students should avoid further contact and call FIU Student Health Services at 305-348-2401 immediately.
Faculty and staff should make an appointment with the Student Health Clinic or be medically cleared before returning to work. Contact the Division of Human Resources at 305-348-2181 to ensure the policy is met and receive important information about work arrangements before returning.
To encourage further spread Dr.Aileen Marty, professor of infectious diseases at FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, has created a video with instructions on how to wear masks.
