The University sent out an email this afternoon confirming that spring semester will be finished online and that they are seeking ” alternate ways to celebrate the spring commencements.”
The email also confirmed that an FIU staff member tested positive for coronavirus. However, they said the individual has not returned to campus since traveling and therefore there is not a high risk of infection on campus.
” … There is no indication, thus far, that the FIU community has been exposed by this individual,” read the statement.
FIU is also temporarily lifting the deadline to drop spring classes with a DR grade.

The Florida Board of Governors announced today that all state universities should finish the spring semester via remote learning and cancel in-person commencement ceremonies due to the novel coronavirus.
After previously directing universities to move classes online until at least April 4, the BOG has extended that directive to the end of the semester “effective immediately” as concerns over the virus continue to rise.
The BOG also recommends that universities consider remaining in remote learning for the early summer semester as well. Students graduating this semester will also most likely not get to walk at commencement under their guidance.
“Traditional on-campus commencement ceremonies will not be held in May. Instead, each university is directed to develop an alternate schedule or method of delivery,” reads their statement on the BOG website.
A spokesperson from FIU Media Relations said that as of now there have been no final decisions made about commencement or refunds for ceremony tickets, but the University will communicate once a plan has been formed.
