It has been over two weeks since FIU has switched to remote learning, joining universities and schools around the nation and globe.

The switch to fully online classes has given rise to Zoom, the remote conferencing service that combines video conferencing, online meetings, chat and mobile collaboration.

It is one company that has been doing well on the stock market, while many others have been struggling to stay afloat due to the effects of the coronavirus.

However, its wide use has led to numerous embarrassing situations made viral.

From forgetting to turn off the video camcorder while using the restroom, to taking bong rips, to unexpected interruptions by parents in their underwear, I have made a list that allows these situations to remain completely avoidable.

Before Starting Zoom

  • Set an alarm for when you have to join the call.
  • Check yourself in the mirror to make sure you look presentable.
  • Put on pants/shorts in case you need to stand up during the meeting.
  • Let others in the house know that you are starting to Zoom.
  • Check the quality of your video and audio.
  • Look behind you to check if your background could be distracting.
  • Have the meeting in a room with a locked door, if possible.
  • Put on earphones to let the rest of the house know you’re on a call.
  • Do not have distracting websites or apps open in case you need to share a screen.
  • Change your background on Zoom, if you would like to.

During a Zoom Meeting

  • Mute yourself if you are not talking and especially if you have to type on the keyboard.
  • Turn your camera off if you need to take your laptop or phone with you into another location.
  • If you don’t know where to look on Zoom, just look at yourself.
  • Use the chat to ask questions instead of having attendees talking over each other.
  • If you need to use another website or app, let the host know. Otherwise, Zoom will warn the host that you switched away for more than 30 seconds.
  • If you’re the host, wait until everyone leaves the meeting in case someone has a last-minute question.

After Closing Zoom

  • Make sure that you actually left the session.
  • Practice gratitude that nothing went wrong.

Happy Zooming.
