The NCAA announced they have officially granted a waiver to Universities allowing for some spring sports athletes to return for another season amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

This is a welcomed decision for many athletes at FIU. Nearly two weeks ago, the spring sports season was canceled by Conference USA, leaving many FIU seniors questioning the future of their sports careers.

The NCAA typically allows players five years of eligibility, this gives redshirt seniors a sixth year and the option to complete their senior seasons.

While it’s unclear how many Panthers will be able to return for their, the sentiments around FIU baseball is that many seniors are ready to return and finish what they started.

“We believe that all of our seniors are happy with this move and are already looking forward to come back for next year,” said redshirt freshman pitcher J.J. Teixeira.

While spring athletes will enjoy an extra year of eligibility, winter sport athletes including FIU basketball will not get the chance to return again next season.

A hopeful opportunity for some, and a heartbreaking decision for others.

PantherNOW will continue to update you as this situation unfolds.
