For many students, this is the first time they will be applying for unemployment as they are furloughed or let go from their jobs until further notice.

Nearly 10 million people have filed for unemployment in the last 2 weeks as the number of coronavirus cases continues to reach unprecedented numbers.

What seemed like a small mysterious microbe, became the conversation of millions around the globe.

“This is a situation that a lot of people are facing with the frustration of not being able to apply,” said Carlos Santana, a junior majoring in computer science.

He had been working at the Drunken Dragon as a bartender’s assistant, also known as a barback.

“All my bills are getting paid with my savings,” said Santana.

According to Santana, his manager had never mentioned anything on applying for unemployment benefits at the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (FDEO).

“This was a conversation never even brought up,” said Santana.

As he applied online he noticed that the site itself was taking longer to load, as millions of people are on the site as well.

“When you click the option to start application, the website takes quite a while to load, after waiting a few minutes the website will take you back to the main page,” said Santana.

In response to the issues experienced by the FDEO website, paper reemployment assistance applications have been made for millions of Floridians.

The applications can be printed and mailed to their headquarters in Tallahassee.

This is an issue that many are having to deal with as a consequence to the COD-V19 impact on the economy.

“It’s a tough situation. I know a lot of people are probably in my shoes or in bigger ones,” said Santana.
