6 Ways to Celebrate PRIDE Month at Home

Valenti Govantes/Staff Writer

The coronavirus may have cancelled parades and festivals but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Pride Month right from your home. Here are six ways you can celebrate while quarantined.

1.Digital Live Streams

Many notable celebrities who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community are hosting livestream events throughout the month. One example is the Global Pride live stream, which is scheduled for June 27th and is to be streamed on YouTube. You can also attend the NYC Pride Drag Fest virtually between June 19th and June 21st on YouTube.

2. FIU LGBTQA Initiatives That’s So Queer Discussions

FIU’s LGBTQA Initiatives will continue to host their That’s So Queer discussions nearly every day on their Instagram account. Various topics discussed in the events include representation in media and social matters related to the community. Check out their Instagram (@fiulgbtqa) every Sunday for a schedule of the week’s virtual events.

3. Watch LGBTQ+ Films

Various streaming services include a variety of LGBTQ+ movies to watch throughout the month. Cult classics such as “ To Wong Foo,” “Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert,” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” can all be viewed on Netflix, Hulu, and Vudu. Documentaries are also available for streaming for those curious about LGBTQ+ history including “Paris is Burning” and “Stonewall Uprising” available on YouTube and PBS.com respectively. You can find more here.

4. Binge LGBTQ+ TV Shows

If you have a preference for the small screen instead, there are plenty of LGTBQ+ themed programs available for binging. Programs such as the insanely popular “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on Hulu, Netflix’s 2018 reboot of “Queer Eye” and sitcom “One Day at a Time,” and even the cartoon phenomenon “Steven Universe” on cartoonnetwork.com and HBO Max.

5. Pride Drive-By Parade

While this isn’t an ideal time for crowds and mass gatherings, people can still throw their own personal pride parades. There’s no limit to innovation. Cars can be decorated in the colors of the LGBTQ+ flag, the speakers can play the most popular queer hits. Doing something like this allows one to not only enjoy time with friends but also to express their creative spirits.

6. Zoom Meeting Party

And of course, what better way to connect and celebrate with friends and families during Pride Month than with a zoom party. The online chat service proved to be an essential utility for maintaining contact, and with a good internet connection groups can participate in games such as Kahoot and Jackbox, or just chat and hangout with friends.
