Although 2020 has been a stress-filled year, it’s given us plenty of time to pick up some new skills and hobbies.  Now with a virtual mixology course, you can add bartending to the list.

The FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality has partnered with the South Beach Wine & Food Festival to host a weekly free mixology class on Zoom.

In a 20-part “Sip With SOBEWFF” series, ChatChow TV host Gio Guiterrez invites different bartenders to show viewers how to mix their own cocktails right at home.

The classes which are held weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays, feature different thematic cocktail recipes, including American, Italian and tropical cocktails.

On Friday June 26, Guiterrez invited Ben Potts, a mixologist from Beaker and Gray, an eatery in Wynwood.

Potts taught viewers how to make three cocktails, The Glass Sipper, Cloud Nein, and the Incredible Bulk. The Glass Sipper has a vodka base, Cloud Nein has a gin base and The Incredible Bulk, the strongest of the drinks,  has a bourbon base.

During each class, the mixologists also educate viewers on the background of each cocktail, including its origin. The mixology course provides insight on which liquor works best for your preferred drink, whether you want it heavy or light.

Co-hosts also invite viewers to ask questions during a 15-minute Q&A session, such as which substitutions can be used, or additional background information for the cocktail.

According to Guiterrez, these classes are perfect for you and your friends to “mix, drink and educate.”

After registering for a class, a Zoom link will be sent to your email within 48 hours along with a recipe, list of ingredients and necessary utensils to properly prepare for the class.

Donations to the class benefit the SOBEWFF and the FIU Chaplin School Hospitality Industry Relief Fund, which provides financial support to bars and restaurants in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County,  who were impacted by the pandemic.

In the funds page, restaurant and bar owners can look for eligibility to receive grants from the 1.5 million dollars raised to support the effort. Donators can also find other ways to support by providing links to shops which are donating profits to the relief fund as well.
