Panthermonium 2020, starring local DJ Silence Of and popular DJ and producer Diplo, took place last week entirely online, a first for FIU when it comes to their concerts.
Usually in-person as one of FIU’s larger Homecoming events, this one took place through the Looped live-streaming platform, reserved for virtual music events.
Aside from a streaming glitch that distorted the audio for the first few minutes of DJ Silence Of’s performance, the stream itself went smoothly, and audience reactions were pumped up throughout the night.
For senior finances major, AJ Mekki, the experience was different but nevertheless welcome.
“The experience wasn’t what I expected compared to last year, but still exciting,” he said.
While the original online event was supposed to feature Steve Aoki, last-minute changes had Diplo replacing him as the headliner.
.“I was very excited to see Steve Aoki,” said Mekki. “It was a bit of a downer that we had Diplo, but it was still a great performance and the music was on point.”
Later in the night, Diplo performed in the XS Las Vegas live stream concert, which took place less than an hour and a half after his performance at FIU Panthermonium concluded.
Throughout the intermissions, students were banding together and chatting with each other through the live chat function attached to the stream.
Students anticipating Diplo were beginning to play a game of recently-gone-viral game “Among Us,” a game where you have to figure out who is trying to sabotage the other players from succeeding the game.
“I had a great time!” said freshman biology major, Laura Gonzalez. “But it felt so different because of COVID and I just hope that by next year we’ll be able to participate in person.”
