FIU had 63 new COVID-19 cases last week, the highest number of self-reported cases recorded in a week since the university began tracking them in August.

37 students and 26 faculty or staff members self-reported having the virus the week of January 4, according to FIU’s COVID-19 dashboard.

30 of the students who reported having COVID-19 last week learn remotely and the remaining 7 cases were of students living or learning on campus.

Of the 26 new faculty and staff cases, 24 work remotely and two work on campus.

Cases reflected on the university’s dashboard are self-reported by students and faculty to the Student Affairs and Human Resources divisions or the FIU COVID-19 Response Team.

The FIU dashboard divides COVID-19 cases into four categories; students living or learning on campus, students learning remotely, faculty/staff working on campus, or working remotely.

The spike in cases coincides with the start of the spring semester and the university’s efforts to repopulate campus offering 54 percent of its classes with some in-person component.

A total of 484 cases have been self-reported to the university since August 17, 2020.

Of the 322 student cases self-reported to the university this semester, 164 live or study on campus. 72 of the 162 faculty or staff who’ve self-reported having the virus teach or work on campus.

The dashboard is updated every Monday by the FIU Covid-19 Response Team.
