The FIU women’s basketball team split this weekend’s series against the Marshall Thundering Herd with scores of 75-60 and 56-65.

FIU’s season and Conference-USA record remain even at 7-7 and 4-4 respectively. Despite their historically bad matchup against the Herd, the Panthers proved their talent against Marshall in the first game.

The Panthers dominated the first game of the doubleheader. They began scoring 12 unanswered points, and forward Alma Danielsson scored 15 points in the first quarter alone. FIU Guard Kyla Nelson also added 11 points of her own early on.

FIU didn’t cool down after their hot start and never give up the lead to Marshall. They ended up comfortably winning the game by a score of 75-60.

Nelson finished the game with 21 points leading all scorers for FIU. Forward Emerald Ekpiteta collected 10 rebounds, eight of which were on defense.

Marshall scored early in the second game, quickly jumping on top with a double-digit lead, and took their lead into halftime by a score of 35-27.

FIU had to bounce their way out of a hole to keep the game close. They managed to tie and take the lead in the fourth quarter, but an offensive surge by Marshall with two minutes to go sealed the game. Ultimately, the Panthers took a 56-65 loss and settled for another split series.

Both Nelson and guard Jiselle Thomas scored 15 points for FIU. Once again, Ekpiteta led the Panthers with rebounds, earning 11.

Next up for the Panthers is a doubleheader back home against the Charlotte 49ers. The first game will be on Friday, January 29th at 7p.m. The second game will be on Saturday, January 30th at 4p.m.
