FIU Men’s basketball will host a doubleheader against the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners this weekend as they try to regain a winning record.
Game one will be played on Friday, February 5th at 7 p.m. and game two will be on Saturday, February 6th, at 2 p.m.
Prior to this weekend, the Panthers beat the Florida Memorial Lions 90-74 on Monday- a game that was meant to be played earlier in the season, but was postponed and rescheduled.
It was a welcome result as FIU had lost seven consecutive games prior to the win. It was their worst run since the 2016-17 season where they lost six consecutive games.
FIU guards Javaunte Hawkins and Antonio Daye Jr. led the team with 20 and 18 points scored respectively. Daye Jr. also topped the team with nine assists while forward Dimon Carrigan scored the most rebounds with six.
FIU holds 6-5 overall record against the Roadrunners dating back to 2002, with their last match in 2020 resulting in the Panthers winning 90-83 in overtime.
The Panthers’ Conference USA record is 2-9 while their overall record is 9-10. FIU is one loss away from equaling their total conference losses from last season as they sit in sixth place out of seven teams in the Eastern Division.
Meanwhile, UTSA holds an 8-9 overall record and are 4-6 in the C-USA. They are in sixth place out of seven in the Western Division.
Defensively, both teams are struggling as the Panthers are ranked 13th out 14 teams in points conceding, averaging 74.17 points a game while the Roadrunners are ranked dead last, averaging 76.24 points a game.
Offensively, Daye Jr. averages 17.5 points a game and is FIU’s most consistent scorer with 297, with guard Tevin Brewer a distant second with 178 points scored. The Panthers will have to rely on them to carry their attack throughout the series.
Both games can be seen on ESPN+. After the doubleheader, FIU will go on the road to face the Texas-El Paso Miners on Friday, February 12th at 9 pm, and Saturday, February 13th at 9 pm.
