The FIU men’s basketball team extended their Conference USA losing streak to nine games after being swept by the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners last weekend.
A poor opening half saw the Panthers lose the first game 80-87 while the Roadrunners dominated the second defeating FIU 47-90.
FIU holds a 9-12 overall record and 2-10 in the conference with their last C-USA victory dating back to January 8th against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. The Panthers sit in last place of the Eastern Division out of all seven teams.
UTSA led early in the first game and finished the first half with a 47-39 advantage. The Panthers fought hard in the second half as both teams took turns topping the scoreboard.
Ultimately, the Roadrunners came out victorious as they maintained the offensive advantage in the last five minutes to seal the game 80-87.
For FIU, forward Dimon Carrigan earned a double-double, scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Antonio Daye, Jr. led the Panthers with 26 points scored, while guard Tevin Brewer added in four assists and 17 points.
In game two, FIU struggled to keep up with the Roadrunners, falling behind 49-25 in the first half. The rest of the game saw the Panthers unable to score for extended periods as UTSA took advantage of the Panthers’ misfiring offense. They finished the game with a commanding 90-47 victory.
Daye, Jr. led the Panthers with 19 points and four rebounds. Guard Jonathan Nunez garnered the most assists with three in a quiet afternoon for FIU’s offense.
The Panthers’ next doubleheader will see them visit the Texas-El Paso Miners at 9 p.m. on both Friday, February 12th, and Saturday, February 13th.
