Top 10 Romantic Comedies to Watch on Valentine’s Day

1.     “When Harry Met Sally”

Starring Billy Crystal as Harry Burns and Meg Ryan as Sally Albright, it is a film on two recent college graduates sharing a car ride to new york city during which the main characters argue on the basis if men and women can be strictly platonic friends to only meet 10 years later at a bookstore where the both of them try to stay friends without romance becoming an issue. 

2.     “Howl’s Moving Castle”

An animated fantasy film by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki in which Sophie, a teenage girl working in her mother’s hat shop world, turns upside down when she meets howl Pendragon a handsome and mysterious wizard. The innocent encounter turns sour when the witch of the waste puts a curse on Sophie to transform her into a 90-year-old woman. Sophie then embarks on a mission to break the curse where she finds herself in Howl’s Moving Castle. 

3.     “Punch Drunk Love”

In this Paul Thomas Anderson film, Adam Sandler stars as Barry Egan, a bathroom supply business owner characterized as timid with a lonely and uneventful life. However, his mundane life takes a turn when he meets his sister’s coworker and proceeds to fall in love with her, only to fall victim to extortionist antics. 

4.    “ Chungking Express”

A Wong Kar-Wai film, “Chungking Express,” is based on two Hong Kong policemen falling in love. Cop 223, trying to get over a lost love, encounters a mysterious woman unbeknownst to Cop 223 is she is a drug dealer. Cop 663, dealing with an unexpected breakup, meets a late-night waitress at the restaurant he visits and process to fall in love with her. 

5.     “Submarine” 

Oliver, a 15-year-old awkward teenager, played by Craig Roberts, sets out to lose his virginity before his next birthday. To achieve this, he begins to romance his classmate Jordana played by Yasmin Paige. Oliver also tries to repair his parent’s marriage when he suspects his mother to be having an extramarital affair with her ex-boyfriend. 

6. “Crazy Rich Asians”

Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), attend Nick’s best friend’s wedding in Singapore. She also meets Nick’s family to learn his family is extremely wealthy and of Singapore’s most eligible bachelors. Throughout the film, she must deal with jealous socialites and Nick’s mother that disapproves of their relationship. 

7.     “The ‘Before’ Trilogy”

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as lovers in ‘Before’ trilogy, consisting of three films and the different parts of each of their lives where they reminisce about their relationship and who they are as individuals. 

8.     “The Big Sick”

Based on the true love story of Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon, where Kumail, an uber driver and struggling stand-up comic, meets Emily, played by Zoe Kazan, in one of his stand ups. The pair begins to date until Emily contracts an illness that leaves her in a coma where Kumail finds himself visiting her in the hospital and developing a bond with her parents while also struggling to appease his traditional Muslim parent’s expectations. 

9.     “But I’m a cheerleader”

Natasha Lyonne stars in this American satirical romantic comedy as Megan, who is considered an average American teenager with a handsome football boyfriend who she does not care very much about and is a cheerleader. Until her parents decide to send her to True Directions, a boot camp meant to change her sexual orientation because her parents believe she is gay. While at True Directions, Megan meets Graham, played by Clea DuVall, and begins to have feelings for her. 

10.    “ Four Weddings and a Funeral” 

Hugh Grant stars in this film as Charles, whose group of friends claim he is a disaster at love. When Charles goes to a wedding, he meets Carrie, an American played by Andie MacDowell. After the wedding and an eventful night, Carrie returns to the United States. Over the course of four weddings and a funeral, Charles and Carrie continue to meet where it makes Charles decide they are meant to be together even though it’s never the right time.
