Though most comic book series focus on high intensity action and stakes there is always one thing that grounds it. Romance. With Valentine’s day around the corner here are ten comic book couples that both have powerful chemistry and great series about their relationship.

10. Daredevil and Elektra

Though they had one of the most fiery relationships in the whole Marvel universe these two characters really were opposites. Elektra a cold hearted killing machine, and Daredevil a hero whose goal was to protect the innocent from people exactly like Elektra. Over the course of their history together no matter what obstacles they faced they always ended up together in some way.

9. Mister Miracle and Big Barda

These two are not as well known compared to other iconic DC couple’s, though they too have a rich history from their intiational relationship from creator Jack Kirby, to the most recent Mister Miracle miniseries by writer Tom King. They two escaped from an endless war on Apokolips to find a better life on Earth and they stayed together. And even though Big Barda is like a foot taller than Mister Miracle the height doesn’t matter.

8. Scarlet Witch and Vision

Just in time for Disney+’s latest series WandaVision, these two have been together for a long time. They even got married in 1974. Though it seems like the marriage aspect has been on and off these two characters still have some form of a relationship. It’s a complex yet emotional pairing. Through the comics and now films and TV series it shows just how important their relationship is to the world of Marvel.

7. Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers

One of the few non-DC and Marvel couples in this list, Scott Pilgrim and Romona Flowers have become a staple for comic book couples. These two show that nobody is perfect, but that doesn’t matter. Two people can come together and overcome all the hardships of life while also coming to the realization of accepting one another.

6. Midnighter and Apollo

Midnighter and Apollo are one of the first LGBTQ characters to have been married in a comic book series. When the WildStorm properties were acquired by DC, this gave these characters much more exposure than they had before by making them a part of the DC Universe. They are also in their own right a Batman and Superman like character. With Midnighter being a modified soldier and Apollo being on the same level as Superman in terms of power. Seeing their relationship expanded on created a more diverse read in comic books.

5. Jean Grey and Scott Summers

These two are the most famous mutant couples in the Marvel Universe. Though their relationship has been strange and who knows how many times it’s been on and off. They still are one of the most interesting pairings in Marvel. While there were times where Jean was with Wolverine, it always ended up with Scott and her together. Even if she went a little crazy in the Dark Phoenix storyline Scott was always by her side.

4. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn has always been known to be with the Joker. For a long time that was her identity, to be Joker’s lover/ accomplice in his war against Batman. Yet she eventually broke away from all of that and found her own way in life. Through her time by herself she developed a relationship with Ivy. It was nice for many readers to see Harley find someone who treated her like a human being and not some tool. While the Joker and Harley had a major impact on the Batman mythos it was only a matter of time before Harley went her own way.

3. Alana and Marko

Another non-DC and Marvel couple Saga written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Fiona Staples tells a romance tale as old as time of two characters from different worlds falling in love with each other. It’s like space Romeo and Juliet.  Alana and Marko are from two different worlds who are in the middle of a galactic war with each other. Even with their races against each other they find love. Having a child in a process as well. It is a fantastic story and uses their relationship and a main plot for a majority of the series.

2. Batman and Catwoman

Bruce Wayne is a multi-billionaire so it would be obvious that he has many relationships. Yet the most prominent one is the romance between him and Seline or their alter egos Batman and Catwoman. No matter how many pairings Batman has had it always goes back to Catwoman. Their relationship had been apparent since her first appearance in 1940. There are countless series that expand on their relationship like Batman: Hush, and most recently a wedding arc in the latest Batman series written by Tom King. Full of pain and heartache it takes Batman down to emotional levels he never experienced before. It’s a new perspective that readers are getting used to and it has a twist on the classic Batman we know.

1. Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson

Like Bruce Wayne, Peter Parker has been in many relationships since his first series. From Gwen Stacy, to Feclcia Hardy (aka Black Cat), while some of them ended in death and tragedy and others faded away, he always ended up with Mary Jane. While Spider-Man isn’t Spider-Man without his power and his gallery of villains they don’t make up his personal life
