The FIU Men’s Basketball Team extended their Conference USA losing streak to 12 games after another loss last weekend against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles by a score of 85-72.
Originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, FIU and Southern Miss only played one game on Friday, February 19th. The second game, which was going to be played on Saturday, was cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Golden Eagles.
The loss for the Panthers puts them at an overall record of 9-15 and a conference record of 2-13, eliminating them from qualifying in the C-USA tournament. They’re currently dead last out of the seven teams in the Eastern Division of the conference.
FIU has only won one game in their last 13 matchups, being a 90-74 victory against the non-conference Florida Memorial Lions on February 1st. Their last victory against a C-USA team came on January 8th against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.
Last Friday, the Panthers controlled most of the game on offense, bouncing to a 26-10 lead in the first 10 minutes. They finished the first half with a score of 43-37.
However, in the last eight minutes of the game Southern Miss went on a 20-10 scoring run. The Eagles held on to the lead for the rest of the game and defeated the Panthers by a score of 85-72.
Leading the scoring for FIU were guards Tevin Brewer and Isaiah Banks, both putting up 15 points. Brewer was a key factor offensively as he also contributed a game-high six assists. Forward Dimon Carrigan grabbed a team-high eight rebounds alongside his 11 points.
FIU will conclude their season with a road trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky, this coming weekend as they take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Both games can be seen on ESPN+ with game one being on Friday, February 26th at 3pm, and game two on Monday, March 1st at 1pm.
