The FIU Swimming Team prepared for the upcoming Conference USA Championship while competing with the Miami Hurricanes in the First Chance Meet on February 13th.
In the meetup, only six swimmers for FIU participated and the friendly comedy was not scored. Still, it was an opportunity for the Panthers to make any last-minute adjustments as they gear up for the C-USA championship meets in Atlanta starting tomorrow through Saturday, February 27th.
Two FIU swimmers topped their personal best times against UM. Rielly McNamara held a time of 59.65 on the 100-yard backstroke since November 2018, but was able to shorten it to 59.27. She also held a time of 1:00:80 in the 100-yard butterfly since December 2017, but now has a o 57.66 seconds record.
Panther Angelina Roque also beat her personal bests in the 100-yard backstroke and butterfly. In February 2019 she held a record of 1:02:27, but now holds a time of 58:62. She also had a record of 1:00.93 in November 2018, and has now posted a new personal best of 58.44.
The Panthers finished their regular season with a perfect 3-0 record. FIU will be going to their seventh straight C-USA championship.
Their six consecutive conference titles are an all time record in the history of Conference USA.
The opponents the Panthers will face in the C-USA Championships this year are the Florida Atlantic Owls, Marshall Thundering Herd, North Texas Mean Green, Old Dominion Monarchs and the Rice Owls.
FIU has a historical edge over FAU, holding a perfect 11-0 series record dating back to their first meet in 2013. Both schools met earlier in the season in a duel meet for both swimming and diving, and the Panthers swept them in both matchups
The only other school competing in the C-USA Championships that FIU regularly meets with is Rice. Since 2015, both teams have an even 2-2 record against each other. The Owls have won the last two meetings including a 102-100 loss on October 19th, 2019.
Day 1 of the finals will begin later today at 4:30pm, with Day 2 on Thursday beginning at 10:30am, then continuing at 6pm. Day 3 on Friday will begin at the same time, and Day 4 on Saturday will have matches at 10:30am, 3pm, and 6pm. Days 2-4 can be seen on C-USA TV.
