The FIU women’s soccer team fell to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles by a score of 3-0 in Fort Myers on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Panthers have an overall record of 2-3 and are 1-3 on the road. Currently, they stand in third place out of the seven teams in the Conference USA Eastern Division. FGCU has an overall record of 2-0-2.
FIU has only beaten FGCU once back in 2010 and have lost their last nine matches.
Only two minutes into the match, FGCU was able to invade FIU territory and score, leading 1-0. The rest of the first half was an offensive stalemate for both schools. FIU only scored one goal in the 1st period, by midfielder Carmen Marin. The Eagles defense played consistent and carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.
When the second half began, FIU showed signs of life on defense. Six saves from goalie Christina Velazquez kept the game at a one goal deficit to start the half.
After twenty minutes of play, FGCU increased their pressure on offense, and scored goals in the 64th minute and 72nd minute to increase their lead to 3-0. No extra time was given, securing the win for the Eagles.
The Panthers only kicked five shots off with one being on goal, while the Eagles produced 18 shots, with nine on goal. FIU also committed nine fouls, compared to FGCU’s three fouls. The Eagles also only needed one save from their goalie throughout the entire match.
FIU will head on the road to Bowling Green, Kentucky to take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their first Conference USA matchup of the season on Thursday, March 4th at 6pm.
