The FIU Softball team lost four out of their five games in their Fort Myers road trip last weekend against the UCONN Huskies, Northern Illinois Huskies, and Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.

The Panthers now have an overall 4-4 record, and are second out of the six teams in the Eastern Division of Conference USA. This follows a three game winning streak at the Felsberg Invitational for the Panthers.

The Panthers played game one on Friday against the Connecticut Huskies. AnnMarie Cooker’s two-run double in the second inning gave the Panthers an early lead.

Both offenses were quiet until the fifth inning when the Huskies scored two runs and tied the game at 2-2. Both teams earned a single run in the eighth inning to raise the score to 3-3. At the end of the ninth inning, a sacrifice fly ball from UCONN resulted in a walk off single, securing a 4-3 win for…

The next day at 11am, the Panthers faced Northern Illinois. The game remained scoreless until the third inning when NIU broke through with a 1-0 lead off of an FIU error on second base. Neither team would score for the rest of the game.

That same day, FIU played a rematch against UCONN. Neither team scored until the fourth inning, when the Huskies tallied a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead. FIU, outfielder Alexis Ross recorded a run off of a double in the bottom of the fourth inning.

This was the Panthers’ lone run of the day, and the Huskies were able to add another run off a single in the sixth inning, completing the sweep against FIU by a score of 3-1.

The Panthers ended their road trip on Sunday with a rematch against NIU at 9am and a matchup against Florida Gulf Coast at 2pm. The Panthers were shut out in game one by a score of 3-0, as the Huskies scored a run in the second, third, and fourth innings.

FIU salvaged the road trip with a win against FGCU by a score of 3-2. The Eagles took an early lead, scoring a run off a single in the bottom of the first inning. FIU responded with a two-run RBI by second baseman Venessa Gallegos in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Catcher Makayla Garcia extended the lead for FIU to 3-1 with an additional run off a single in the fourth inning. FGCU was able to score another run in the fifth inning, but the Panthers held them off for the rest of the game to secure a 3-2 victory.

Next for the Panthers is the Spring Games Tournament in Clermont, starting on Friday, February 26th at 2:30pm against the Kentucky Wildcats, and continuing at 5pm against the New Mexico State Aggies. They’ll match up against the Stetson Hatters on Saturday, February 27th at 1:30pm, and rematch with the Aggies at 6:30pm to close out the Tournament.
