FIU had 41 new COVID-19 cases last week.

33 students and eight faculty or staff members self-reported having the virus the week of Mar. 1, according to the university’s self-reported dashboard.

Of the 33 new student cases reported, 20 were of students living on campus. The remaining 13 cases were of students learning remotely.

Eight faculty or staff members working remotely, none working on-campus reported having the virus last week.

Last week marked the highest number of student cases reported in a week since the second week of the semester. FIU and state public universities cancelled Spring Break this semester to avoid the spreading of COVID-19 that would’ve taken place this week.

The university required faculty and staff to fully return to campus starting Mar.1, according to FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg.

The university had not gone a week without cases for faculty or staff teaching or working on-campus since Sept. 28, until last week. The number of self-reported cases for faculty or staff working remotely decreased from January but, in the last month an average of six to eight new cases have been reported every week.

The university’s COVID-19 dashboard only reflects cases that are self-reported by students and faculty to the Student Affairs and Human Resources divisions or the FIU COVID-19 Response Team.

The FIU dashboard divides COVID-19 cases into four categories; students living or learning on campus, students learning remotely, faculty/staff working on campus, or working remotely.

A total of 347 cases have been self-reported to the university since the start of the spring semester, with 231 students and the remaining 74 are faculty or staff members.

FIU has reported 831 COVID-19 cases, 291 were students living or learning on campus and the other 262 were of students learning remotely. This follows 278 staff and faculty members reported having the virus, 118 were working on campus while the other 160 were working from home.

The dashboard is updated every Monday by the FIU COVID-19 Response Team.
