The FIU Women’s Soccer team was defeated at home in a Conference USA matchup against the Old Dominion Monarchs 2-0 on Thursday, March 11.

The Panthers have lost their last four matches and this defeat dropped their overall record to 2-5. FIU’s conference record now slips to 0-2 and puts them dead last out of the six teams in the Eastern Division.

FIU has now lost their last three games against Old Dominion, and are 2-3 in the series dating back to 2013. The last Panther victory against Old Dominion came back in 2014, with a 2-1 victory.

The first half was a chess match as neither team was able to break one another. FIU held the majority of the possession in the first half, keeping the action mainly on Old Dominion’s side of the field. They were able to create chances in the first half, firing off five total shots. Unable to score on any of them, the first half finish deadlocked at zero.

In the second half, The Panthers started strong. In the 58th minute FIU midfielder Angie Ponce Baque fired off a strike from about 20 yards out that went just inches over the crossbar. In a matter of minutes, however, the momentum switched as Old Dominion scored from a free kick in the 61st minute, making the score 1-0.

The Panthers couldn’t respond, and found themselves down 2-0 after another goal by the Monarchs in the 82nd minute. No extra time was given, and FIU lost their fourth game in a row.

Despite the Panthers having twelve shots, with six of them being on target, they either bounced off the crossbar or were blocked by ODU’s goalie. FIU fouled Old Dominion nine times, with Panther defender Estefani Cardona receiving the game’s lone yellow card.

Next up for FIU is a road matchup in Coral Gables against the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday, March 14th at 6:00pm.
