The FIU women’s soccer team was shut out in Coral Gables against the Miami Hurricanes on March 14th, extending their losing streak to five games.

The Panthers’ overall record has now fallen to 2-6, and they are 0-2 against Conference-USA opponents. They’re also last out of the seven teams in the C-USA Eastern Division.

Historically, FIU has struggled against the Hurricanes, only managing one win in their nine meetings dating back to 2011. The 4-0 loss against Miami marks the largest margin of victory for either team in the series. FIU last beat UM on September 11, 2016 by a score of 1-0.

FIU was aggressive early on, as forward Sydney Amparo and defender Sydni Greaves forced two saves from Miami’s goalkeeper within the first 15 minutes. In response, UM opened the scoring in the 20th minute to take an early 1-0 lead.

Miami doubled their lead in the 41st minute, as they turned the tide of the game and applied pressure to the FIU defense. The Panthers struggled offensively in the first half after their strong start, only recording one shot on goal after the first 15 minutes of the half.

FIU began the second half with a shot on target in the 46th minute by midfielder Laia Munoz Danon, but they were unable to convert as the Miami goalkeeper parried the ball away. Munoz Danon led the team with three shots on goal.

The Hurricanes stretched their lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute. Just seven minutes later, they tallied another goal, finalizing their win with a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers were held scoreless despite recording 13 shots compared to Miami’s nine. FIU also was only able to save one shot on goal, while the Hurricanes were able to save six.

Up next for FIU is a road trip in North Carolina for a matchup against the Charlotte 49ers on Friday, March 19th.
