The FIU Women’s Soccer team lost their sixth straight game of the season against the Charlotte 49ers by a score of 3-1 in North Carolina on Friday, March 19th.

The overall record for the Panthers is 2-7, and they have an 0-3 record against Conference USA opponents. They’re ranked dead last out of seven teams in the Eastern Division of C-USA.

Historically, FIU has struggled against these 49ers with a winless record of 0-8 dating back to September of 2013, when the Panthers lost by a score of 2-0.

FIU started out slow, forcing two fouls in the first six minutes, giving Charlotte the opportunity to play more in their own offensive zone. In the ninth minute, the 49ers striked a shot and got on the board first.

The score remained 1-0 through the middle of the first half as Charlotte forced FIU to stay on defense. From the 12th minute to the 32nd minute, the 49ers took a total of five shots including two on goal. Those shots paid off as Charlotte added another goal in the 34th minute and finished off the first half dominating by a score of 2-0.

In the second half, the Panthers were much more aggressive on defense, giving the 49ers less opportunities on offense .FIU finally got back to their own offensive zone as forward Courtney Walker led the charge, getting a shot on goal in the 62nd minute and got redemption a minute later as she scored her first goal of the season, and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Charlotte responded ten minutes later by scoring once more. With little to no time to respond, FIU was unable to get another goal, and the final score was 3-1.

The Panthers took seven shots with only four of them on goal, while Charlotte had taken 23 shots, with eight on goal. FIU had fouled Charlotte 17 times, with four yellow cards being handed out to FIU.

After a rescheduled matchup against the Marshall Thundering Herd on Monday, FIU will stay at home for another C-USA game against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Friday, March 26th at 7pm.
