SGA Candidate Penalized for Elections Code Violation

A candidate for FIU’s Student Government Association senate is banned from campaigning for the remainder of the election for promoting his candidacy through SGA’s Instagram account.

Luis Moros, who is running to be a School of International and Public Affairs senator with The Future is You party, is prohibited from any sort of campaigning for 48 hours, following his violating the SGA elections code.

Additionally, no one else may campaign on Moros’ behalf.

In a hearing Tuesday night, the SGA elections board unanimously ruled that Moros violated two provisions of the elections code that prohibit candidates from using SGA property or resources to promote their campaigns.

Moros had tagged SGA’s Instagram account in posts promoting his campaign, and reposted their Instagram posts promoting his campaign.

Evidence submitted with the elections code violation writ to the Elections Board

SGA was not allowed to do this either.

Board members emphasized that SGA’s social media coordinator also made a mistake by reposting Moros’ post, but ultimately decided to hold Moros responsible for his role in the situation because he was made aware of the election rules.

The board determined that Moros’ actions constituted a Tier III violation of the elections code, which carries a minimum penalty of a 48 hour campaign ban.

The elections code violation writ against Moros was filed on March 30 by David Luis, also a candidate for SIPA senator. Luis is not affiliated with a political party.

The elections board decided to hold a virtual hearing hours later, around 9:30 p.m. While all elections board hearings are open to the public, the board did not inform the student body prior to it.

SGA elections began on Tuesday March 30, and end Wednesday March 31.
