An FIU student was found dead at University Apartments (UA) on the Modesto Maidique Campus this afternoon, according to a university-wide email.
“Police do not suspect foul play,” stated the email sent on Thursday, Oct. 14 by FIU Communications.
“They just did a wellness check a few minutes ago [about 4:00 p.m.], and they found the body there,” said Nathan Naylor, a resident assistant for housing at Panther Hall.
Three students on the scene – who asked to remain anonymous – said they saw fire rescue and police enter a dorm in Building C where they live.
Andrew Naylor, senior director of FIU’s Housing and Residential Life, huddled around with a group of campus employees and students near the scene.
“We are just providing support right now,” Naylor told PantherNOW.
The email also offered support for the those affected by the tragedy.
“At FIU, the wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff is our priority,” stated the email. “We want you to know that you are not alone.”
FIUPD Chief Alexander Casas, Sergeant Jose Ramirez and Madeline Baró, director of FIU Media Relations, told PantherNOW they could not provide any further information, as the investigation is developing.
For resources and support, students can contact FIU’s Counseling and Psychological Services, and faculty can contact the Office of Employee Assistance.
PantherNOW will update this story as more information is found.
