Geek Culture: A Club for Everyone

Imagine you are sitting in a classroom with six other people in front of a table with a Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) board. The room looks simple, and from the outside, it looks like nothing special is happening.

But you grab the polyhedral dice and get transported to a magical world where you are a magician in a fictional world completing a special quest in a unique adventure that you helped to create.

Just as D&D is a storytelling game, the Geek Culture Club is an opportunity for you to tell your own story. It’s a place where you can express yourself however you want and disconnect from the rest of the world, while diving into fun social activities such as role games, movie nights, art challenges, and more!

The Geek Culture Club originated in 2013, and has a board that consists of a president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, social media manager, and art director who is in charge of all the art events.

The club meets every Monday and Friday at 6 p.m. Even though they don’t have a designated room to meet, you can usually find them in the Graham Center. They always post updates about their meetings on social media.

The club hosts a variety of craft events such as art challenges where they draw themselves as Halloween monsters and pick out a winner, and artist introductions where members present themselves, the materials they draw with, and the things they like to draw.

The Geek Culture Club also hosts movie and anime watch party nights and game nights where they play games like Dungeons and Dragons and Among Us.

“This is a great place to meet new people and hang out, it’s super chill and open to everyone. It’s a judge free zone,” said Veronica Valdez, president of the club.

This club is also a great place to show and share your interests, as some of the watch parties hosted consist of a member showing a game or show that they like and why.

This gives everyone the opportunity to try something new and connect with the rest of the group with similar interests.

Following quarantine the club has been hosting events in-person, online, and hybrid, to adapt to all the member’s preferences.

All upcoming events and club information can be found posted on their social media. You can follow them at @geekculturefiu on Twitter and Instagram. They also have a Discord server through which you can connect with the club members and talk about anything freely.
