With the holiday season kicking off, FIU and South Florida have a lineup of events ready to get you in the cozy mood. This week’s selection of events feature some long beloved Miami events like the Youth Fair and the Miami Book Fair. See our picks for more information on what events are taking place this week and how to get involved in the fun.

  1. FIU CAPS: Calming the Mind

Monday, Nov. 15

CAPS at FIU is holding a virtual workshop for students on Monday. The workshop will focus on addressing anxiety and the patterns of thought that can lead to an anxious mind. Students can learn to increase their insight and recognize patterns in their thinking.

  1. Miami Book Fair

Monday, Nov. 15

This year the Miami Book Fair is back with events both online and in person. Tickets are available to purchase for readings and events both online and at the Miami Book Fair. On Saturday, Professor of English at FIU, Richard Blanco, will be a contributor for “On Home in Florida: LatinX Writers and the Literature of Uprootedness.”

  1. Challah-Day Cook-Along: When Thanksgiving Meets Shabbat

Tuesday, Nov. 16

The Jewish Museum of Florida is hosting a free virtual event for students, faculty, staff, and the general public to make cranberry orange challah. Miami-based chef Romi Naparstek will guide viewers through the magical process of baking in this fusion of Jewish culture and the Thanksgiving traditions of cooking.

  1. Full Moon Circle presented by FIU Healthy Living

Wednesday, Nov. 17

FIU’s Healthy Living is having a workshop on Wednesday afternoon on how to use the full moon energy to meditate, do yoga, and journal. The full moon this month rises on Nov. 19, so make sure you join this workshop to learn the benefits of the full moon.

  1. Symphony in Lights Holiday Celebration at Gulfstream

Thursday, Nov. 18

At the top of every hour starting at 6 p.m., the more than 250,000 lights at the Gulfstream Park Village are set to light up with a sound show. The display is open to the public and is located outside in the main square of Gulfstream. The lights will illuminate until Dec. 31, so if you can’t go this weekend, there’s still plenty of time to see the lights.

  1. The Youth Fair

Friday, Nov. 19

The Youth Fair returns to South Florida. Rides, attractions, games, and food are all part of the festivities of the beloved fair. Tickets are available at the door or online, with a discount on tickets purchased online. The opening and closing times vary, so make sure to check online before you head over for the day.

  1. Saluting Those Who Served Tailgate and Football Game

Saturday, Nov. 20

Veteran and Military Affairs at FIU is hosting a tailgate at the Riccardo Silva Stadium before the FIU Football game against North Texas. FIU Athletics will also be honoring veterans throughout the game. The tailgate is open to students, faculty, staff, veterans, and members of the public.

  1. Miami Dragon Boat Festival

Saturday, Nov. 20

GWN Dragon Boat is having their inaugural Miami Dragon Boat Festival in the Miami Marine Stadium of Key Biscayne. Watch the racers as well as enjoy local food and vendors. Multiple vendors will be holding giveaways and selling products to promote good health.
